Discovering Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to Finding Purpose and Passion in Work and Life

Business

“Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion.” – Simon Sinek

This quote from Simon Sinek really resonates with me because I find such a sense of satisfaction from working. Throughout my career I’ve said in jest that I ‘can’t believe I get paid to do what I do’.

Quiet quitting persists as a narrative and I must confess, this phenomenon baffles me. When I reflect on it, I realize that I’ve been lucky enough to adore my employers and have felt a great sense of purpose and pride in the work my team and I have done.

I spent some time in Japan and learned about the philosophy of Ikigai, which essentially translates as ‘your reason for being.’ While I agree that everyone should have personal interests, hobbies, and friends outside of the office, your career could be a place of great fulfillment. Why not live a life full of purpose – in both your personal and professional lives? Wouldn’t that be better?

In a world where the pursuit of happiness and fulfillment often feels elusive, the Japanese concept of Ikigai offers a refreshing perspective. Derived from the words “iki” (life) and “gai” (worth), Ikigai translates to “that which gives your life worth, meaning, or purpose.” It’s a profound philosophy that encourages individuals to seek the intersection of what they love, what they’re good at, what the world needs, and what they can be paid for. In this blog post, we’ll explore the essence of Ikigai and how it can transform your approach to work and life.

Ikigai: The Essence of Living with Purpose

At its core, Ikigai is about finding the sweet spot where your passions and talents align with the world’s needs and financial stability. It’s a holistic approach to life that goes beyond mere career choices; it encompasses your entire existence.

The Quiet Quitting Epidemic: A Call to Rediscover Purpose

Many people find themselves stuck in jobs they view as a means to an end. They go through the motions of earning a living but lacking the deep satisfaction that comes from aligning their work with their passions. This phenomenon, now referred to as “quiet quitting,” can lead to stress, burnout, and a sense of purposelessness.

Why Not Pursue What You Love?

Considering that we spend a significant portion of our lives at work, it makes sense to pursue something we’re passionate about. Ikigai encourages individuals to break free from the cycle of quiet quitting and discover their true calling.

The Four Elements of Ikigai

To fully understand Ikigai, let’s break it down into its four essential elements:

What You Love (Passion): Identify your true passions and interests. What activities make you lose track of time? What brings you joy and fulfillment?

What You’re Good At (Vocation): Recognize your strengths and talents. What skills come naturally to you? What do you excel in?

What the World Needs (Mission): Consider how your passions and skills can contribute to the greater good. What can you do to make a positive impact on the world?

What You Can Be Paid For (Profession): Explore how your passions and skills can translate into a sustainable career. How can you monetize what you love while ensuring financial stability?

The Overlapping Sweet Spot: Your Ikigai

Ikigai comes to life at the intersection of these four elements. It’s the place where you can find true purpose, fulfillment, and passion in your work and life. By aligning what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for, you unlock the secret to a deeply satisfying and purposeful existence.

How to Discover Your Ikigai

Discovering one’s Ikigai, the Japanese concept of finding purpose and passion in life, is not only a personal journey but also a path that businesses can actively support their employees in navigating. Keep reading to explore the art of discovering one’s Ikigai and how forward-thinking businesses can play a pivotal role in helping their employees identify and align their passions, strengths, and values with their professional lives. By fostering a workplace environment that encourages self-reflection, experimentation, guidance, and actionable steps, organizations can create a win-win scenario where both employees and the business thrive in harmony.

1. Self-Reflection:

Encouraging employees to engage in self-reflection can be immensely beneficial for businesses. By providing opportunities for introspection, organizations empower their staff to identify their passions, strengths, and values that can be aligned with their roles within the company. For instance, during performance evaluations or career development discussions, employers can encourage employees to reflect on what aspects of their work ignite their passion, where they excel, and what values they align with. This insight can help in better job role alignment and improved job satisfaction.

2. Experimentation:

Businesses that foster a culture of experimentation enable employees to explore different facets of their roles and interests. This can be achieved through cross-functional projects, job rotation, or skills development programs. Allowing employees to step out of their comfort zones and try new things not only helps them discover what resonates with them but also brings fresh perspectives and ideas to the organization. It can lead to innovative solutions and new business opportunities.

3. Seek Guidance:

Businesses can play a pivotal role in connecting their employees with mentors, coaches, or counselors who can assist them in uncovering their Ikigai within the workplace. Mentorship programs can provide invaluable guidance, helping employees to understand their strengths and how to leverage them effectively in their careers. These mentors can also help employees align their personal values with the company’s mission, reinforcing their sense of purpose in their roles.

4. Take Action:

Ultimately, taking action is where businesses can witness the most significant transformation. Encouraging employees to take concrete steps towards aligning their careers with their Ikigai can lead to improved job satisfaction, higher engagement, and increased productivity. Organizations can support employees by providing opportunities for skill development, career advancement, and flexible work arrangements that allow individuals to pursue their passions and personal missions alongside their professional responsibilities.

Incorporating these principles of self-reflection, experimentation, seeking guidance, and taking action into the workplace not only benefits individual employees but also leads to a more engaged and motivated workforce. When employees find their Ikigai within their roles, they become more committed to the organization’s mission, resulting in increased productivity, lower turnover rates, and a more positive workplace culture, ultimately contributing to the overall success of the business.
